Naxos Town (Hora)

Lovely and Lively

Naxos Town or Hora, the island's port and capital, is a typical Cycladic town with a maze of twisting narrow streets and tiny passages. It is a lively town and makes an excellent resort. Behind the waterfront an extensive, almost Medieval Old Quarter stretches up the hillside where Venetian Castle (Kastro) is. This was the seat of power for Marco Sanudo, the 13th-century Venetian who founded the town and made Naxos the heart of the Duchy of the Aegean. Walking inside and around the Castle is a must while the views will take your breath away.

Today there is a medieval settlement that is still very much alive. The Venetian Castle is one of the very few castles in Greece still inhabited. There are Venetian Catholic descendants still living in the old mansions which encircle the site. You will particularly enjoy how Venetian and Catholic elements merge into classic Cycladic architecture and colours as the neighbourhood expands beyond the castle.

Thank you all
